Walking down the street one day,
I came across a man just lying there
Cold, dirty and partly sick with the
most haunting depressing stare.
Quickly taking inventory of myself standing there
Fit and strong but in the back of my mind
wondering if that was me would anyone care?
My answer being yes, made me do something
neither he nor I would ever expect.
I sat down on the ground where he lay
at first not really knowing what to say,
but once we were eye to eye quite naturally
I just asked him “are you alright?”
Now as his eyes began to focus on me
he began to smile, a smile so bright
I almost wanted to shield my eyes.
“I’m doing fine” he replied.
Looking around I became uncomfortable
as people continued to pass us by.
Nobody stopped but they sure would stare.
The man said “today I was planning
to end my life and be away from here.
Now I’m not because you stopped
and showed you care.”
